Some treatments belong in the hospital setting, in the operating theatre and with a multidisciplinary team. Hospital maxillofacial surgery covers in particular:
- facial trauma
- oncology of the oral cavity, oropharynx, head and neck and salivary glands
- dentofacial deformities — for example a chin positioned too far forward (prognathism) or too far back (retrognathism), possibly resulting in sleep apnoea — and orthognathic surgery
- congenital anomalies, the most frequent being cleft lip and palate
- reconstructive surgery of the face using grafts, flaps or facial prostheses
- aesthetic surgery of the face
